Bitcoin and retirement accounts: a new wave of adoption

Institutional investors are no longer simply considering cryptocurrencies but are increasingly seeking ways to integrate digital assets into established investment structures—specifically.

This was reported by a senior executive at crypto infrastructure company SFOX.

The US Individual Retirement Account (IRA) market, worth over $12 trillion, is increasingly incorporating cryptocurrencies into retirement portfolios. This poses a new challenge for the industry: how to provide investors with access to Bitcoin without exposing their retirement savings to the extreme volatility that has historically characterized this asset.

Animus, a company that serves IRA account holders, uses the infrastructure of crypto provider sFOX for over 1,000 retirement accounts, allowing it to actively manage Bitcoin exposure at scale. This partnership reflects a broader shift in cryptocurrency adoption: traditional investors are moving away from asking whether they should own digital assets and toward focusing on how they can be held within traditional investment structures.

"The institutional players are already here," said Diana Pires, director of business development at sFOX. "The question has always been how to adopt it, not whether they use it. It's just another asset class."

According to Pires, the growing interest from retirement investors has less to do with Bitcoin price predictions than with creating the infrastructure needed to incorporate the asset into portfolios with fundamentally different risk requirements than traditional crypto traders.

"When we look specifically at IRAs, we see this," said Pires. "It's never a question of 'if,' only 'how.'" This distinction is becoming increasingly important as Bitcoin attracts investors less prone to the wild swings that have historically accompanied cryptocurrency markets. Pires noted that Bitcoin has repeatedly fallen by more than 50% throughout its history—a level of drawdown that might be acceptable for hedge funds or experienced crypto traders, but is extremely difficult to fit into retirement accounts.

"A retirement fund needs a certain level of stability," Pires said. "You can't just 'strap' cryptocurrency into a retirement account the same way you would a regular trading account."

This has created demand for an infrastructure that can integrate asset custody, liquidity, licensing, API access, and sub-account capabilities, while allowing digital asset exposure to be managed according to the risk profile of retirement investors. According to Pires, sFOX's role is to eliminate fragmentation between different segments of the cryptocurrency market. The executive noted that institutional players have already entered the crypto space, and the discussion has shifted from "will they participate" to "how digital assets can be integrated into existing investment structures." This requires institutional-grade asset custody, liquidity aggregation, licensing, API access, sub-account infrastructure, and proof-of-reserve systems.

The approval and active discussion of cryptocurrency ETFs has also played a significant role in increasing adoption by making digital assets more understandable to traditional investors. According to the executive, the ETF structure, combined with greater regulatory certainty, allows investors to access cryptocurrencies through familiar products and instruments.

Regulatory changes could further strengthen this trend. Even before final legislation is passed, the public debate around cryptocurrency regulation in the US is helping to establish digital assets as serious financial instruments, rather than niche products associated primarily with speculative trading and meme coins. Speaking about prospects beyond ETFs and retirement accounts, the top executive highlighted the tokenization of real assets as another area that is likely to play an increasingly important role in the digital asset market. Tokenization could open up a wider range of markets for investors through blockchain-based investment structures, although the pace of development will largely depend on regulatory clarity.
