Volkswagen workers protest plant closures

Volkswagen union leader Daniela Cavallo told workers on Tuesday that trust in CEO Oliver Blume had been undermined during restructuring negotiations,

but she said the situation was still reversible.

Cavallo addressed more than 10,000 workers at an extraordinary meeting at the automaker's main plant in Wolfsburg, which Blume also attended. The meeting was called to protest the potential closure of the plants.

"The German plants belong to the Volkswagen Group. They are an integral part of it," Cavallo said, according to excerpts published by the works council.

"Our trust in the company's board of directors, and especially in its CEO Oliver Blume, has been undermined. Not completely, but it has been undermined," she added.

Blume told the gathering that current profitability is insufficient to finance the company's future. According to him, Volkswagen intends to use voluntary measures for its staff whenever possible.

The CEO stated that the company is striving to create a sustainable outlook for its German plants over the next six to twelve months. Blume called plant closures the most extreme and costly measure.
